CHARITY

“Where are you going?” I propped myself on my elbows.

He raked his hand through his hair. “I thought you were asleep.”

I tried not to let my hurt show on my face or in my voice. “Is this all we get then, one night?” It was difficult to remain angry when he stood in the middle of my bedroom naked.

“Are you sure you want more, Charity?”

“Don’t you?”

“You father is my best friend, but you have more to lose.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “I can’t be the reason your relationship goes to shit with Nathan. Do you know how long…” He shook his head as if to clear it. “Since that weekend on the yacht, I knew I was drawn to you. Perhaps even before. But I would not act on it.”

I flushed. Embarrassed that back then, I hadn’t fully considered the turmoil he was going through. “I would have understood if you’d explained it.” I sighed.

“I was married. Separated or not, I couldn’t date anyone, let alone my best friend’s daughter. Not to mention you weren’t even in college yet.”

My heart warmed at his admission. I was glad he wasn’t the type of man that would court a teenager, even if at the time my fragile ego had stung. “You had feelings for me.” It wasn’t a question but more of a realization as I pieced together our tense relationship.

“Why do you think I avoided you? Only came to the Key on special occasions.”

I took a deep breath. My stomach fluttered at his admission. But I wasn’t a little girl anymore and Mason wasn’t married. We were adults. “It still doesn’t explain why you’re sneaking off now.”

“I need you to be sure that I’m who you want in your bed, because there’ll be no going back if we go down this road.”

I loved my father, and I was in love with Mason. I couldn’t imagine letting go of either of them. The two men and Naomi were the three closest people in my life. But I understood what he was asking, and it wasn’t a simple decision.

He turned to leave and my heart shattered. “You said that if I took your dick, I could have anything I want.”

“Charity…” He closed his eyes as if in agony.

“Are you retracting your offer, counselor?”

His gaze pierced mine. “Name it and it’s yours,” he finally said.

I throw the comforter back. “Sleep with me.”

He groaned. “We already did that.” Even as he said the words, his dick twitched.

“I’m not talking about sex and you know it.”

“You’re not playing fair, Charity.” The bed dipped as he got under the blanket. Our naked bodies fit together as if we’d shared a bed for ages and for the first time in years, I wasn’t lonely. Everything we wanted was here, and all we had to do was figure out how to keep it. How to not burn our relationships to the ground as we did so.

I tucked my head under his chin, leaning into his warmth.
